The Milos viper (Macrovipera schweizeri) is an Endangered species that is heavily dependent on the passerine bird masses passing through the islands during the two annual migration periods. Entering its habitat — whether within a Natura 2000 site or outside protected areas — and actively searching for or capturing individuals for photography can have a significant impact on populations.
(1) According to Greek legislation (L. 3937/2011), photography and filming of the species require prior authorization through an official permit application process. Applications can be submitted through the following portal: Greek Ministry permit application portal
Applicants are required to justify the purpose of their request. We strongly recommend arranging permits well in advance of any planned visit to the islands.
(2) If you intend to conduct fieldwork, photography, filming, or observational activities involving the species, please notify us once your permit has been granted by filling the following form: https://forms.gle/QThe8k3co3JXgwWbA.
The first part of this process is a legal requirement under Greek legislation. The second is voluntary; however, by adhering to this two-step process you support ongoing conservation efforts, help ensure awareness of legitimate presence within these habitats, and contribute to anti-poaching monitoring.
